Released in 2008, obZen represents the commercial and critical peak of Meshuggah's middle period. After the experimental, one-track long-form composition of Catch Thirtythree, the band returned to a more traditional song-based structure while retaining their signature polymetric complexity. This album marked the return of Tomas Haake to a physical drum kit in the studio, moving away from the software-based percussion of the previous record. The track 'Bleed' became an instant legend in the metal community due to its extreme physical demand on the drummer, specifically the relentless 'herta' kick drum pattern.
