Released in 1995, Destroy Erase Improve is widely considered the pivotal moment where Meshuggah transitioned from a Metallica-influenced thrash act into the pioneers of what would eventually be termed 'djent.' While their debut, Contradictions Collapse, hinted at technicality, this record fully embraced polymetric structures - where the drums often maintain a 4/4 pulse while the guitars cycle through odd-time signatures. This creates a 'sliding' rhythmic effect that became the band's hallmark. The album also features significant jazz-fusion influences, particularly in Fredrik Thordendal's lead guitar work, which echoes the fluid, chromatic style of Allan Holdsworth.
