Hostile Planet

Released in 2016 on Photon Emissions, Hostile Planet represents a peak in Somatic Responses' ability to fuse narrative sci-fi concepts with abrasive IDM structures. Spanning 23 tracks and nearly two and a half hours, the album is framed as a sonic exploration of alien warfare, space travel, and colony collapse. The Healey brothers utilize their signature rhythmic noise and high-velocity percussion to create a sense of 'hostility' that is both thematic and literal. While their earlier work often leaned into the raw aggression of industrial techno, this record showcases a more refined, albeit still punishing, digital architecture. It features self-reflexive moments, such as the track 'Probably listened to too much Autechre today,' acknowledging its lineage within the experimental electronic canon. Critically, it is viewed as a dense, challenging work that pushes the boundaries of the IDM genre into more cinematic and aggressive territories.
