Exai

Released in 2013 on Warp Records, Exai is Autechre's eleventh studio album and one of their most expansive works, clocking in at over 120 minutes. Following the more stripped-back and 'oversteps' era, Exai represents a synthesis of their career, blending the melodic sensibilities of their early work with the extreme algorithmic complexity of their later period. The album was recorded using a sophisticated Max/MSP setup, allowing Rob Brown and Sean Booth to create rhythms that feel non-linear and generative. Critics noted its daunting length but praised its internal logic and the duo's ability to find 'soul' within highly abstract structures. It stands as a pivotal bridge between their club-adjacent roots and the purely generative, long-form 'NTS Sessions' that would follow years later.
