Burning Bridges

Released in 1999, Burning Bridges is the third studio album by Arch Enemy and serves as a definitive bookend to the band's first chapter. It is the final album to feature founding vocalist Johan Liiva, whose departure shortly after marked the band's shift toward the more commercially successful Angela Gossow era. Recorded at Studio Fredman with legendary producer Fredrik Nordström, the album is widely considered one of the finest examples of the melodic death metal genre. It introduced bassist Sharlee D'Angelo to the lineup, solidifying a rhythm section that could match the technical demands of the Amott brothers' dual-lead guitar work. Musically, the album is notable for its increased tempo and more complex arrangements compared to its predecessor, Stigmata, incorporating elements of progressive metal and even brief nods to grindcore. The inclusion of Mellotron and grand piano on the closing title track showcased a willingness to experiment with atmosphere that was rare in the scene at the time. Critics often cite this album as the moment Arch Enemy perfected their 'NWOBHM meets Death Metal' formula.
