Servitude

Servitude marks the tenth studio outing for The Black Dahlia Murder and represents the most significant turning point in their history. Following the tragic passing of founding vocalist Trevor Strnad in 2022, the band opted to continue with founding guitarist Brian Eschbach moving to lead vocals. This shift necessitated the return of fan-favorite guitarist Ryan Knight, whose neoclassical influence on albums like 'Ritual' and 'Deflorate' is felt immediately across these ten tracks. The songwriting is split between Eschbach, Knight, and Brandon Ellis, resulting in a diverse but cohesive exploration of melodic death metal. The album leans heavily into the band's signature 'Gothenburg-meets-Detroit' sound, blending the harmonic sophistication of At The Gates with the raw power of American death metal. Critics have noted the album's surprising consistency and the successful integration of Eschbach's vocal style, which maintains the band's high/low dynamic while carving out its own identity.
