Driving basslines and sharp social commentary that bridge the gap between punk defiance and melodic new wave. Music for the activist heart and the late-night thinker.
Tom Robinson’s music is defined by a rare combination of punk-rock urgency and a sophisticated, melodic pop sensibility. His sound is anchored by his own prominent, rhythmic bass playing, which provides a sturdy foundation for songs that are as catchy as they are confrontational. There is a palpable sense of the 1970s and 80s British urban landscape in his work, evoking images of smoky clubs, political rallies, and rain-washed streets.
What truly distinguishes Robinson is his unflinching lyrical honesty and pioneering role as an activist. Long before it was safe or fashionable, he used his platform to champion LGBT rights and social justice, delivering these messages through anthemic choruses and sharp, observant storytelling. His voice, a warm and steady baritone, lends a sense of authority and lived experience to every track, whether he is leading a high-energy rock number or a more intimate, piano-led ballad.
To understand his impact, start with the high-octane energy of '2-4-6-8 Motorway' for a taste of his rock-and-roll roots, then move to the landmark 'Glad to Be Gay' to hear his political bravery in action. For his more atmospheric, synth-touched 80s evolution, 'War Baby' remains an essential, haunting masterpiece of the New Wave era.
