Chrissie Hynde

Tough, melodic rock with a smoky contralto edge. Defiant new wave energy that feels like a leather jacket and a long night in the city.

Intro

Chrissie Hynde sounds like the coolest person in the room who doesn't care if you notice. Her music is a masterclass in tension and release, blending the jagged edges of 70s punk with the melodic sophistication of 60s pop. It is anchored by her unmistakable voice, a rich, vibrato-heavy contralto that can shift from a sneer to a whisper in a single breath.

What truly sets her apart is the 'tough-tender' dichotomy. She possesses a rhythmic guitar style that is percussive and unschooled, providing a gritty foundation for songs that are often surprisingly vulnerable. Her solo work expands this palette, occasionally dipping into jazz standards or stripped-back acoustic arrangements, but the core remains a singular, uncompromising rock identity.

Start with her solo debut 'Stockholm' to hear her modern rock sensibilities, or dive into 'Valve Bone Woe' if you want to experience her smoky, late-night jazz reinterpretations. Both showcase a legendary artist who remains entirely herself regardless of the genre she inhabits.

Christine Ellen Hynde (born September 7, 1951) is an American-British singer, songwriter and musician. She is a founding member of the rock band the Pretenders and is the band's lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter; she is the band's only original member and is the only continuous member of the Pretenders, having appeared on every studio album released by the band. Hynde formed the Pretenders in Hereford, England, in 1978, with Pete Farndon, James Honeyman-Scott and Martin Chambers. She has also recorded a number of songs with other musicians, including Frank Sinatra, Cher and UB40. Hynde recorded her first solo album, Stockholm, in 2014. Hynde was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 as a member of the Pretenders.
