Intimate, piano-led pop defined by the uncanny vocal blend of two brothers. Warm, melancholic, and deeply melodic songs for quiet reflection and long drives.
Listening to The Finn Brothers feels like being invited into a private family conversation that has been going on for decades. Their music is anchored by a 'blood harmony' that only siblings can achieve, where two distinct voices merge into a single, resonant third entity. It is sophisticated pop music that doesn't mind getting its hands dirty with real, sometimes uncomfortable, emotional truths.
The distinctive quality here is the interplay between Neil's gift for effortless, soaring melody and Tim's more eccentric, theatrical leanings. While their work in Crowded House and Split Enz was often aimed at the charts, their collaborative albums feel more experimental and internal. You'll hear unexpected chord changes, lush piano arrangements, and lyrics that dwell on the complexities of shared history and the passage of time.
Start with the album 'Everyone Is Here' if you want to hear their most polished and emotionally resonant work. It is a masterpiece of mature songwriting that explores their relationship as brothers. For something a bit more raw and adventurous, their 1995 self-titled debut 'Finn' offers a moodier, more lo-fi glimpse into their creative chemistry.
The Finn Brothers are a New Zealand musical duo consisting of brothers Neil and Tim Finn. In June 1993 both members were awarded the OBE for their contribution to music. The two brothers began making music together at a young age; later, when Neil was 18, he was invited to join older brother Tim in Split Enz. Neil would go on to write one of the band's biggest hits, "I Got You". Tim released his first solo album Escapade before leaving Split Enz, and the band folded soon after. Neil started his own group, Crowded House and subsequently recorded two solo albums after Crowded House split in 1996. He reformed Crowded House in 2007, releasing four albums since then. Neil and Tim have also released a series of separate solo albums. After working on a Finn brothers album with Neil, Tim joined Crowded House for the Woodface album in which they jointly wrote several major hits. Tim toured with Crowded House in 1991 and continued to appear as a guest musician until the band broke up in 1996. The brothers finally released albums under the Finn Brothers moniker in 1995 and 2004.
