Intro

KIRINJI, originally formed as a duo by brothers Takaki and Yasuyuki Horigome in 1996, represents the pinnacle of post-Shibuya-kei sophisticated pop in Japan. Their sound identity is built on a foundation of 1970s American AOR and yacht rock, specifically the meticulous harmonic language of Steely Dan, filtered through a distinctly Japanese urban sensibility.

The first era of the band (1996-2013) focused on the interplay between the brothers' voices and their increasingly complex arrangements, peaking with the critically acclaimed album '3'. Following Yasuyuki's departure in 2013, Takaki expanded the group into a six-piece ensemble, diversifying the sound with female vocals (notably Kotringo) and more prominent electronic textures. By 2021, the project transitioned into Takaki's solo vehicle. Critically, KIRINJI is revered for 'Aliens', a song often cited as one of the greatest in J-pop history for its haunting melody and sophisticated structure. They occupy a unique space in the Japanese music scene, bridging the gap between mainstream J-pop and the 'city pop' revival, while maintaining a level of technical musicality that appeals to audiophiles and theory nerds alike.
