Tangerine Dream is the foundational pillar of the Berlin School of electronic music. Founded by Edgar Froese in 1967, the group evolved from experimental krautrock (Electronic Meditation) into a pioneering synthesizer ensemble that utilized the Moog and VCS3 to create 'kosmische Musik.'
Their mid-1970s output, particularly Phaedra and Rubycon, introduced the world to the use of sequencers as a primary compositional tool, influencing everything from New Age to Techno. The band's career arc is marked by distinct eras: the experimental 'Pink Years,' the sequencer-heavy 'Virgin Years,' and the cinematic 'Blue Years' where they became prolific film scorers (Sorcerer, Risky Business). Despite Froese's death in 2015, the group continues under Thorsten Quaeschning, maintaining the tradition of 'real-time' composition. Critically, they are viewed as the bridge between the avant-garde (Stockhausen, Ligeti) and modern electronica, holding a permanent place in the canon for their ability to humanize cold machine technology through atmospheric depth and improvisational flux.
