Zeit

Released in August 1972, Zeit marks a pivotal transition for Tangerine Dream, introducing Peter Baumann to the lineup and solidifying the 'classic' trio of Froese, Franke, and Baumann. It is a radical departure from the more chaotic, rock-influenced textures of 'Alpha Centauri', opting instead for a 'motionless' philosophy of time. The album is famously a double LP containing only four tracks, each occupying a full side. It features guest appearances from Florian Fricke (Popol Vuh) on Moog and a quartet of cellists, blending chamber music gravity with experimental synthesis. Often cited as the first dark ambient album, its lack of rhythmic pulse was a point of contention that led to the departure of former member Klaus Schulze. It remains one of the most uncompromising and influential works in the history of electronic music, predating the ambient movement by years.
