Kyoto

Kyoto is a unique archival project in the Tangerine Dream discography, consisting of material originally composed by Edgar Froese and Johannes Schmoelling during their 1983 Japanese tour. Due to internal band friction at the time, these recordings were shelved for over two decades until Froese and Schmoelling collaborated to restore the original 24-track tapes for a 2005 release. Sonically, the album serves as a missing link between the 'Hyperborea' and 'Le Parc' eras, showcasing the melodic, sequence-driven 'Berlin School' sound that defined their most commercially successful period. The tracks are heavily influenced by the band's impressions of Japanese culture and geography, ranging from the frantic energy of 'Industrial Life' to the serene 'Shogun's Prayer.' Critically, it is regarded as a high-water mark for the Schmoelling era, praised for its authentic analog textures and cohesive thematic focus that many felt was missing from the band's contemporary 2000s output.
