Shelagh McDonald

Shelagh McDonald is a pivotal yet enigmatic figure in the 1970s British folk-rock and singer-songwriter movement. Emerging from the Edinburgh and London folk scenes, she released two highly regarded albums, 'Album' (1970) and 'Stargazer' (1971), before a traumatic LSD experience led to her abrupt withdrawal from public life for over thirty years.

Her sound is characterized by a pure soprano range, often compared to Joni Mitchell and Sandy Denny, but with a distinct Scottish lilt and a penchant for baroque-pop arrangements. She collaborated with elite musicians of the era, including Richard Thompson and Robert Kirby, the latter of whom provided the signature string arrangements that link her work to Nick Drake. Her disappearance turned her into a cult figure among crate-diggers and folk historians. Her 2005 re-emergence and subsequent return to performing in 2013 added a rare 'second act' to a career that was long considered a tragic mystery.
