SBB

Heavy Moog-driven fusion and cosmic prog from the Polish underground. A masterclass in technical tension and soulful, analog-soaked exploration.

Intro

SBB sounds like the collision of high-concept European art rock and the gritty, improvisational heat of American jazz fusion. Their music is defined by Józef Skrzek’s swirling Minimoog leads and Apostolis Anthimos’s blues-inflected guitar, creating a sound that is simultaneously cosmic and grounded in the earth. It carries the weight of its 1970s Polish origin, possessing a certain melancholy and urgency that feels like a secret transmission from behind the Iron Curtain.

What makes them truly distinctive is their ability to shift from tight, complex rhythmic patterns to expansive, ambient explorations without losing their internal logic. Unlike many of their Western contemporaries who leaned into polish, SBB maintained a raw, almost live energy in the studio. Their frequent collaborations with jazz luminaries added a layer of harmonic sophistication that pushed their 'blues band' roots into the stratosphere.

Start with 'Follow My Dream' (1978). It captures the band at their creative peak, balancing accessible melodic themes with the sprawling, improvisational brilliance that made them a legendary live act across Europe. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who loves the technicality of Yes but craves the soul and grit of Mahavishnu Orchestra.

SBB (first known as Silesian Blues Band, later as Szukaj, Burz, Buduj – Polish for "Search, Destroy, Build") is a Polish progressive rock band formed in 1971 in Siemianowice, Upper Silesia. It was made up of multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Józef Skrzek, guitarist Apostolis Anthimos, drummer Jerzy Piotrowski, and sound engineer Grzegorz Maniecki. SBB was one of the most popular super-groups in Poland and Europe in the 1970s. The band was one of the forerunners of progressive rock and jazz-rock and attracted many influential jazz musicians, who often performed with the band. The trumpeter Andrzej Przybielski and the saxophonist & bass clarinetist Tomasz Szukalski developed a long lasting association with SBB.
