Sun-drenched neo-soul with a gospel heart and a pop brain. Warm brass, raspy vocals, and rhythms that feel like a long overdue hug.
Samm Henshaw makes music that feels like the sonic equivalent of a perfectly timed sunrise. It is rooted deeply in the grit and glory of gospel, but it carries the effortless cool of modern neo-soul and the infectious hooks of classic pop. His voice is the centerpiece: a textured, slightly raspy instrument that can jump from a playful whisper to a powerful, church-shaking belt without losing its intimate charm.
What sets him apart is the sheer kinetic energy of his arrangements. While many of his peers lean into the 'low-fi' or 'chill' side of R&B, Henshaw embraces a vibrant, live-band sound. Expect punchy horn sections, hand-clapped percussion, and rich vocal harmonies that sound like a whole community showed up to the recording session. It is sophisticated without being pretentious, and soulful without being heavy.
Start with 'Untidy Soul' to hear him at his most cohesive. It’s an album that balances self-reflection with pure, unadulterated joy. If you want a quick hit of his energy, the single 'Church' perfectly captures his ability to blend spiritual roots with a secular, hip-hop-influenced groove that is impossible not to move to.
