Polished retro-soul with a modern urban pulse. Warm brass and hip-hop rhythms frame a voice that feels both classic and contemporary. Perfect for late-night city drives.
Daniel Merriweather delivers a sophisticated blend of blue-eyed soul and contemporary R&B that feels deeply rooted in the 1960s but built for the 21st-century city. His sound is defined by a rich, slightly raspy vocal delivery that can pivot from a vulnerable whisper to a powerful, brass-backed belt without losing its cool. There is a distinct cinematic quality to his arrangements, often featuring lush string sections and punchy, Motown-inspired horns.
What sets him apart is the rhythmic backbone provided by his frequent collaborator Mark Ronson. Instead of traditional soul drumming, many of his tracks utilize crisp, hip-hop influenced breakbeats and heavy basslines that give the music a gritty, urban edge. This juxtaposition of classic songwriting and modern production creates a sound that is nostalgic yet forward-thinking, appealing to fans of both vintage soul and modern pop.
Start with his 2009 breakthrough Love & War. The album showcases his ability to navigate different moods, from the upbeat, Wale-assisted 'Change' to the soaring, emotional heights of 'Red'. It is the definitive document of his sound, capturing the intersection of Australian grit and London's retro-soul revival.
