Warm, piano-led soul that feels like a Sunday morning in New Orleans. Uplifting R&B with a live-band heartbeat and masterclass vocal harmonies.
PJ Morton creates music that feels like a warm embrace from an old friend. It is deeply rooted in the traditions of classic soul and gospel, yet it possesses a crisp, modern polish that keeps it feeling immediate. The foundation is almost always his virtuosic piano playing, which carries the harmonic complexity of jazz but remains grounded in infectious, head-nodding grooves. His voice is a smooth, agile tenor that can navigate intricate runs without ever losing its sense of sincerity or emotional weight.
What truly distinguishes Morton is his commitment to 'real' musicianship in a digital age. He favors live instrumentation, rich vocal stacking, and arrangements that breathe. There is a palpable New Orleans DNA in his rhythm section, a certain 'pocket' that feels loose but remains perfectly locked in. He manages to bridge the gap between the sacred energy of the church and the secular cool of neo-soul, creating a sound that is universally positive without being saccharine.
For those new to his catalog, Gumbo is the essential starting point. It captures him at the height of his powers, blending social commentary with romantic soul and impeccable production. If you want to hear the raw power of his live performance, Gumbo Unplugged offers a breathtaking look at how his songs translate with a full orchestra and backing band. It is music for people who value craft, heart, and a groove that feels like home.
P.J. Morton (born Paul Sylvester Morton Jr.; March 29, 1981) is an American musician, singer, songwriter and record producer. In 2010, he joined pop rock band Maroon 5, as a touring member and became an official member after Jesse Carmichael went on a brief hiatus in 2012. During this period, Morton signed with Young Money to release his debut major-label studio album, New Orleans (2013), and later self-released Gumbo, which earned him two Grammy Award nominations for Best R&B Album and Best R&B Song at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards. Since then he has received six Grammy Awards. Outside of music, Morton stated in 2019 that he would begin a project to restore the New Orleans home of jazz pioneer Buddy Bolden and create a museum and community space at the site. Bolden's former home has been owned by Morton's father's church for more than a decade, and had been cited for demolition by neglect.
