Peter Perrett

Fragile, world-weary vocals floating over elegant guitar lines. A masterclass in sophisticated rock decay for late nights and long memories.

Intro

Peter Perrett sounds like the elegant aftermath of a long night. His music carries a distinct sense of 'after the gold rush' weariness, characterized by a vocal delivery that is famously detached, breathy, and almost impossibly cool. It is the sound of a man who has seen everything and survived to tell the tale with a wry, slightly cynical smile. The instrumentation is classic but refined, leaning on jangly electric guitars and steady, understated rhythms that allow his storytelling to take center stage.

What makes Perrett truly distinctive is the juxtaposition between his fragile, almost vulnerable voice and the sharp, literate bite of his lyrics. While many of his contemporaries in the post-punk era leaned into aggression, Perrett leaned into a sort of decadent romanticism. His solo work, particularly his late-career resurgence, maintains the melodic sensibilities of power pop but filters them through a lens of hard-won wisdom and suburban noir. It is music that feels lived-in, dusty, and deeply human.

For those new to his catalog, his 2017 comeback 'How the West Was Won' is an essential entry point. It captures the essence of his survival, pairing his signature Lou Reed-adjacent drawl with lush, modern production that highlights his enduring gift for melody. It is the perfect introduction to an artist who managed to disappear for decades only to return with his creative powers entirely intact.

Peter Albert Neil Perrett (born 8 April 1952) is an English singer, songwriter, musician and record producer. He is the lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist and principal songwriter for the rock band the Only Ones. Prior to forming the Only Ones, who were initially active between 1976 and 1982, Perrett formed England's Glory, whose recordings were finally released in 1987. Following the break-up of the Only Ones, Perrett retreated from public life before forming the One in 1994. The Only Ones reformed in 2007, and Perrett released his debut solo studio album, How the West Was Won, in 2017. Humanworld, his second solo studio album, was released on 7 June 2019. His third studio album, The Cleansing, was released in 2024.
