Omen

Omen was formed in Budapest in 1990 as a supergroup of sorts, following the fracture of Pokolgép, the most influential Hungarian metal band of the 1980s. Founded by guitarist László Nagyfi and vocalist József Kalapács, Omen quickly established a more aggressive, modern sound than their predecessor, incorporating elements of speed and thrash metal into a traditional heavy metal framework.

Their early 90s output, specifically the trilogy of 'Feketében', 'Brutális Tangó', and 'Anarchia', is considered the gold standard of Hungarian metal from that era. The band's sound is defined by technical proficiency without sacrificing the 'street' energy of the genre. Despite numerous lineup changes, including the pivotal departure of Kalapács in 2000, the band has remained a cornerstone of the Hungarian scene for over three decades. Critically, they are respected for maintaining a consistent metal identity during the 90s when many contemporaries pivoted to grunge or alternative rock. Their influence is foundational for subsequent generations of Eastern European power and groove metal acts.
