Ruthless

Formed in 1982 in Los Angeles, Ruthless is a foundational pillar of the US Power Metal (USPM) scene. Their sound identity is characterized by a blend of classic British heavy metal influences (Judas Priest, Iron Maiden) and the more aggressive, street-ready energy of the early 80s California metal underground.

Their 1984 EP 'Metal Without Mercy' and 1986 full-length 'Discipline of Steel' are considered cult classics, prized by collectors for their raw production and Sammy D's distinctive vocal range. After a long hiatus starting in 1990, the band experienced a significant critical resurgence in the late 2000s, fueled by the European festival circuit (specifically Keep It True and Swordbrothers). This led to a successful reunion and a second creative era, producing modern albums like 'Evil Within' and 'The Fallen' that maintain their signature aggressive traditionalism. Historically, they are significant for bridging the gap between the NWOBHM sound and the more muscular, riff-centric approach that would define American metal throughout the decade.
