Gladiators

Gladiators (Germany) was a power metal quintet active between 1998 and 2000, representing the grassroots tier of the German heavy metal scene. Their sound is characterized by a 'traditional heavy metal' approach, eschewing the symphonic elements of contemporaries like Blind Guardian in favor of a rawer, more aggressive style reminiscent of early Grave Digger or Running Wild.

The band released two full-length albums, 'Steel Vengeance' (1998) and 'Bound to Steel' (1999), via Black Arrow Productions. A notable point of interest for collectors is the presence of bassist Maik Metzner, who crossed over from the legendary crust/grindcore outfit Extreme Noise Terror, bringing a certain level of underground credibility to the rhythm section. Critically, they are viewed as a 'cult' act that embodied the 'True Metal' movement of the late 90s, focusing on themes of steel, battle, and metal brotherhood. Their career was brief, but they remain a footnote in the German metal lineage for their uncompromising adherence to genre tropes before disbanding at the turn of the millennium.
