Mulu

Mulu was a British trip-hop duo consisting of vocalist Laura Campbell and producer Alan Edmunds. Active during the late 1990s, they represent the second wave of trip-hop, where the genre's initial Bristol-born grit was refined into a more cinematic and studio-polished aesthetic.

Edmunds, a prolific remixer for high-profile acts like Björk and Fluke, brought a sophisticated electronic palette to the project, blending breakbeat percussion with lush, orchestral arrangements and deep synth textures. Their sole album, 'Smiles Like a Shark' (1997), is a cult classic of the era, praised for its atmospheric depth and Campbell's sultry, emotive vocal delivery. Critically, Mulu is often grouped with acts like Mandalay and Olive, representing a bridge between underground electronic music and the more accessible downtempo pop that would follow. Despite a brief chart presence with the single 'Pussycat', the duo remained a niche favorite, eventually dissolving as the trip-hop movement waned. Their work remains a significant artifact of the 90s UK electronic scene, valued by collectors for its high production values and evocative noir-pop sensibilities.
