Submerged trip-hop and ghostly electronica from the heart of Tokyo. Murky, late-night beats paired with whispered, ethereal vocals for moments of deep solitude.
ACO creates music that feels like a humid, neon-lit night in a city that never sleeps but is currently very quiet. Her sound is a masterclass in atmosphere, blending the rhythmic DNA of Bristol trip-hop with a distinctly Japanese sense of space and minimalism. It is music that exists in the shadows, characterized by slow-motion breakbeats, dusty vinyl textures, and a pervasive sense of urban melancholy.
What truly sets her apart is her vocal delivery. She doesn't sing at the listener; she whispers into the mix, her breathy tones often submerged under layers of reverb or glitchy electronic processing. This creates an intimate, almost voyeuristic experience, as if you are overhearing a private internal monologue. Her evolution from jazzy pop into avant-garde electronica shows a restless artist who prioritizes mood and texture over traditional pop structures.
To understand her world, start with the album Absolute Ego. It represents the perfect intersection of her pop sensibilities and her experimental electronic leanings. From there, move to Material for a deeper dive into her murky, downtempo landscapes, or Irony if you want to hear her at her most delicate and lullaby-like.
A..C..O (born February 3, 1977) is a Japanese singer. She made her debut in 1995 with the pop single "Fuan nano" (不安なの). She is a part of Sony Music Japan. She explores different musical styles, with the albums Absolute Ego and Material displaying electronica influences. Absolute Ego was produced by ex-Denki Groove keyboardist, Yoshinori Sunahara and The Other Side of Absolute Ego album contains remixes by Tricky, DJ Krush, and Silent Poets. In 2003, after a two-year hiatus, she enlisted the help of the avant-garde audio-visual performance group portable [k]ommunity for her quieter, more delicate album, Irony. AllMusic described Irony as "one of the most beautiful albums to come out of Japan in 2003", with the music compared to an "airy lullaby".
