Bright, celebratory trumpet and gravelly vocals that feel like a New Orleans block party. Pure joy, swing, and the smell of backyard barbecue.
Kermit Ruffins makes music that feels like a warm embrace from a city that never wants the party to end. It is unapologetically happy, rooted in the loose, swinging traditions of New Orleans jazz but delivered with a modern, communal spirit. His trumpet playing is bright and melodic, favoring a 'silvery' clarity over technical abstraction, while his vocals carry a raspy, conversational charm that makes every song feel like a personal invitation to join the fun.
What truly sets Kermit apart is the lack of a fourth wall. His recordings often capture the atmosphere of a live club or a backyard cookout, complete with banter, laughter, and the palpable energy of a room full of people dancing. He channels the spirit of Louis Armstrong not through imitation, but through a shared philosophy that music is a service meant to lift the soul and fill the stomach.
Start with 'The Barbecue Swingers Live' to hear him in his natural habitat, or 'Big Easy' for a studio-polished version of his signature Treme sound. It is the perfect soundtrack for any moment that requires a high-energy, feel-good atmosphere without the aggressive edge of modern pop.
Kermit Ruffins (born December 19, 1964) is an American jazz trumpeter, singer, and composer from New Orleans. He has been influenced by Louis Armstrong and Louis Jordan and says that the highest note he can hit on trumpet is a high C. He often accompanies his songs with his own vocals. Most of his bands perform New Orleans jazz standards though he also composes many of his own pieces. Jon Pareles of The New York Times wrote, "Mr. Ruffins is an unabashed entertainer who plays trumpet with a bright, silvery tone, sings with off-the-cuff charm and never gets too abstruse in his material."
