Intro

John Parr captures the exact moment in the 1980s when rock music became inseparable from the silver screen. His sound is defined by a massive, polished production style that feels both expensive and deeply earnest. It is the audio equivalent of a training montage: all driving percussion, shimmering keyboard layers, and electric guitars that strike with surgical precision. There is an inherent sense of scale here that demands a large room or an open road.

What truly sets Parr apart is the grit in his delivery. While his contemporaries often leaned into a smoother pop sheen, Parr retained a pub-rock rasp that gave his soaring melodies a necessary edge. This vocal texture provides a human anchor to the technicolor synth arrangements, making his anthems feel earned rather than manufactured. His ability to write for a specific narrative purpose has made his music synonymous with the 'hero's journey' archetype.

Start with his self-titled debut for a masterclass in AOR songwriting, then move straight to the iconic soundtrack work. It is music designed to make you feel like the protagonist of your own life, providing a surge of adrenaline and a belief that any obstacle can be overcome with enough momentum.
