Evil

Evil is a seminal Danish heavy metal band that emerged during the fertile period of the early 1980s. While often overshadowed by their countrymen Mercyful Fate, Evil carved out a niche by blending the melodic sensibilities of the NWOBHM with the burgeoning speed metal movement.

Their 1984 debut EP, 'Evil's Message,' remains a cult classic of the era, prized by collectors for its raw production and high-energy songwriting. The band's sound is characterized by galloping rhythms, dual-guitar interplay, and the raspy, distinctive vocals of Pearl Angel. After a long hiatus, the band returned in the 21st century, notably with 'Book of Evil' in 2022, proving that their commitment to traditional, unpolished heavy metal remained intact. Critically, they are viewed as a bridge between classic 70s hard rock and the more extreme thrash and black metal movements that would follow. Their influence is most keenly felt in the 'New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal' (NWOTHM) scene, where modern bands look to Evil's early work as a blueprint for authentic, high-velocity metal.
