Avenger

Avenger is a quintessential representative of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), specifically the harder, faster 'speed metal' wing of the movement. Formed in Newcastle in 1982, the band's core identity was forged in the same North East furnace as Raven and Venom, though they maintained a more traditional heavy metal structure than the latter.

Their debut 'Blood Sports' (1984) is a cult classic, showcasing a band transitioning from the bluesy roots of 70s rock into the high-velocity aggression that would eventually inform American thrash metal. Despite a brief initial run and a name change to 'Avenger UK' to avoid confusion with the German band (which later became Rage), their influence persists among NWOBHM collectors and speed metal purists. Critically, they are viewed as a 'bridge' band, essential for understanding the evolution of extreme metal. Their sound is defined by Brian Ross's early involvement and later the distinctively raw delivery of Ian Swift, backed by a rhythm section that prioritized frantic energy over studio polish.
