Intro

Stephen Simmonds occupies a unique space where the precision of Swedish pop craftsmanship meets the deep, organic warmth of classic soul. His music is characterized by a liquid smoothness, featuring rich vocal arrangements that glide over mid-tempo grooves and elegant piano melodies. It is sophisticated without being cold, offering a refined listening experience that feels both timeless and distinctly modern.

What sets Simmonds apart is his ability to blend the social consciousness of 70s soul with the sleek production of the neo-soul era. His collaborations with heavyweights like Raphael Saadiq are evident in the way his rhythm sections breathe, maintaining a tight pocket while allowing for melodic exploration. There is a specific 'blue' quality to his work, a gentle melancholy that never feels heavy, but rather comforting.

Start with his breakthrough album 'Alone' (or its international version 'Spirit Tales') to hear the definitive sound of 90s/00s Swedish soul. The duet 'Tears Never Dry' remains an essential entry point, showcasing his ability to anchor a massive pop hook with genuine emotional depth.

Stephen Guy Simmonds is a Swedish recording artist born in Täby, Sweden, 26 June 1975. Born to a Jamaican father, a musician by profession, and a Swedish mother, he was raised in Sweden, the United States, and Israel. He studied at Adolf Fredrik's Music School and Södra Latin Music School, both in Stockholm, Sweden. After recording a demo with Swedish producer Peter Cartriers, Simmonds signed record deals with Parlophone/EMI in the UK and Priority Records in the United States. His first album, Alone, was released later that year, and was nominated for five Grammys. Alone was re-mixed and renamed Spirit Tales for his UK and US release. In 1997, Simmonds had his breakthrough with the hit "Tears Never Dry" a duet with Lisa Nilsson that proved his biggest single hit. Since Alone/Spirit Tales, he has released three more albums: For Father in 2002, This Must Be Ground in 2004 and, after a long hiatus, Anomie in 2010.
