Bifrost Arts

Starkly beautiful hymns reimagined through a lens of indie-folk melancholy. Fragile, communal, and deeply reverent music for quiet reflection.

Intro

Bifrost Arts sounds like the intersection of a centuries-old liturgy and a modern indie-folk basement session. It is music that breathes with the creak of piano pedals, the warm sigh of a cello, and the unvarnished honesty of voices that sound like your neighbors rather than pop stars. There is a profound sense of space and stillness here, as if the songs were recorded in a drafty stone chapel during the first snowfall of the year.

What makes this collective distinctive is their refusal to lean into the polished, high-energy tropes of contemporary religious music. Instead, they embrace the 'aesthetic of the amateur' and the beauty of lament. By bringing together indie heavyweights like Damien Jurado and Sufjan Stevens, they create a sound that is intellectually rigorous yet emotionally vulnerable, prioritizing the texture of the arrangement over the volume of the message.

Start with 'Come O Spirit! Anthology of Hymns & Spiritual Songs, Vol. 1.' It serves as the perfect introduction to their mission, featuring hauntingly beautiful reinterpretations of traditional texts that feel both ancient and startlingly new. It is the ideal companion for those who seek spiritual depth without the gloss.

Bifrost Arts is an ecumenical religious organization closely linked to the Presbyterian Church in America that produces written and recorded religious music, and frequently performs at Christian Universities and conferences. Bifrost Arts was co-founded by Joseph Pensak and Isaac Wardell. Bifrost Arts is unique in its approach to religious music in that it generally employs musicians whose success exists outside of the traditional Christian music industry. In 2009, Bifrost Arts' Come O Spirit! Anthology of Hymns & Spiritual Songs Volume 1 (Sounds Familyre Records) was ranked by Christianity Today as the No. 4 record of the year. Later that same year, Salvation Is Created: A Christmas Record From Bifrost Arts was released. Notable contributors to Bifrost Arts' recordings have included Joseph Pensak, Sufjan Stevens, David Bazan, Rosie Thomas, Leigh Nash, Damien Jurado, The Welcome Wagon, Derek Webb, Denison Witmer, Devon Sproule, Shara Worden, Laura Gibson, The Gregory Brothers, Lenny Smith, Mason Neely, J. Tillman, Trent Dabbs, Isaac Wardell, Diane Birch, and Sanders Bohlke.
