Lost in the Trees

Lush, orchestral folk that feels like a quiet conversation in a cathedral. Intricate string arrangements and hushed vocals for moments of deep reflection.

Intro

Lost in the Trees creates music that feels like a physical space, specifically one with high ceilings and a heavy history. It is chamber music for the broken-hearted, where the precision of a classical conservatory meets the raw, unvarnished honesty of Appalachian folk. The sound is defined by its use of 'heavy' instruments like the tuba and cello to create a grounded, somber foundation for Ari Picker's delicate, almost whispered vocals.

What truly sets them apart is the compositional rigor. Unlike many indie folk acts that use strings as mere decoration, Picker writes for his ensemble with the complexity of a modern composer. You can hear the influence of Vivaldi and Saint-Saëns in the way the violins weave through the guitar melodies, creating a dense, multi-layered tapestry that feels both ancient and immediate. It is music that demands your full attention, rewarding the listener with sudden, breathtaking swells of cinematic beauty.

For the uninitiated, the best place to start is the 2012 masterpiece A Church That Fits Our Needs. It is a staggering exploration of grief and memory, featuring some of the most sophisticated orchestral arrangements ever heard in an indie context. If you prefer something slightly more rhythmic and modern, their final album Past Life offers a more synth-inflected, stripped-down take on their signature melancholy.

Lost in the Trees was an American orchestral folk pop band from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The lineup consisted of Ari Picker (writer/vocals), Emma Nadeau (french horn/vocals), Drew Anagnost (cello), Jenavieve Varga (violin), and Mark Daumen (tuba). Lead singer Picker cites diverse influence such as Beethoven, Radiohead, Vivaldi, Neutral Milk Hotel, Saint-Saëns, and OutKast, among others. Paste Magazine described its music as "mountaintop chamber music, a happy marriage of old folk traditions and even older orchestral ones," and listed the band among "The 20 Best New Bands of 2010."
