The Waves, The Wake

Released in 2018, The Waves, The Wake represents the most significant sonic evolution in the Great Lake Swimmers' career. To celebrate the band's 15th anniversary, frontman Tony Dekker challenged himself to write an entire album without his primary instrument, the acoustic guitar. This constraint led to a lush, chamber-folk sound defined by woodwinds, piano, harp, and lute. Recorded at the historic Bishop Cronyn Memorial Church in London, Ontario, the album utilizes the natural acoustics of the space to create a sense of physical presence and spiritual weight. Critics, including those at AllMusic, noted the album's departure from their traditional Americana roots toward a more experimental, baroque-pop sensibility. The record serves as a bridge between their early silo-recorded minimalism and a more sophisticated, orchestral future, maintaining their core themes of nature and isolation while expanding their musical vocabulary.
