Ulysees

Released in 2014, Ulysees represents a significant stylistic pivot for Justin Nozuka. Following the success of his more traditional soul-folk debuts, Nozuka took a four-year hiatus, eventually emerging with a record that prioritized atmosphere over traditional song structure. Recorded with a focus on live takes and natural resonance, the album is heavily influenced by the landscapes of rural Ontario. The tracklist is peppered with short, vignette-like pieces ('Nest', 'Dreaming') and longer, more expansive meditations ('Hera', 'lulius'). Critically, the album was noted for its 'slow-burn' quality and its departure from the radio-friendly sound of his youth. It occupies a unique space between indie-folk and ambient music, utilizing the acoustic guitar not as a rhythmic engine, but as a source of shimmering, liquid melody.
