Hadsel

Hadsel marks a significant turning point for Zach Condon, born from a period of physical and mental exhaustion that led him to the island of Hadsel in northern Norway. Seeking refuge from persistent throat issues and burnout, Condon spent the winter of 2020 in a small cabin, gaining access to the local church's pipe organ. This instrument becomes the primary character of the record, dictating its pace and spiritual weight. Unlike the globetrotting, celebratory feel of 'Gulag Orkestar' or 'The Flying Club Cup', Hadsel is an internal travelogue. It was entirely self-recorded and performed, marking a return to the bedroom-pop origins of the project but with the sophisticated arrangement skills Condon has honed over two decades. Critics noted the album's 'glacial' beauty and its successful integration of electronic elements with traditional acoustic textures, praising it as one of Beirut's most cohesive and emotionally honest works to date.
