The Solace System

Released as a companion EP to their 2016 full-length 'The Holographic Principle', The Solace System consists of six tracks recorded during the same sessions but polished for a standalone release. Far from being mere 'B-sides', these tracks represent some of Epica's most focused work from their mid-career peak. The album continues the band's fascination with quantum physics, the nature of reality, and the 'holographic' universe theory. Sonically, it maintains the high-budget, maximalist production standards of its predecessor, featuring live orchestral and choral elements rather than synthetic patches. The EP is notable for its balance: 'Fight Your Demons' showcases their more aggressive, power-metal-leaning side, while 'Immortal Melancholy' provides a rare moment of vulnerability and acoustic simplicity. Critics generally viewed the EP as a testament to the high quality of the band's songwriting during this era, noting that the material was strong enough to have easily fit on a main studio album.
