While maintaining the symphonic and progressive roots established on landmark albums like Epica and The Black Halo, this record incorporates significant industrial and electronic elements to support its 'Shadow Theory' concept - a psychological look at the three pillars of society: the Shadow Empire, the Shadow Key, and the Shadow Theory. Produced by long-time collaborator Sascha Paeth, the album features a highly polished, 'wall of sound' production style. Notable guest appearances include Lauren Hart (Once Human) and Jennifer Haben (Beyond the Black), who provide vocal textures that range from ethereal to abrasive.
