Released in 2002, A Night at the Opera marked a radical departure for Blind Guardian, moving away from the speed metal roots of their early career toward a dense, progressive, and symphonic sound. The album is famous for its extreme production, reportedly featuring hundreds of vocal tracks per song to create a 'choir of Hansis.' This complexity led to internal friction, eventually resulting in the departure of longtime drummer Thomen Stauch, who preferred a more straightforward rhythmic approach.
