The Last Sunset

Released in 1991 on the band's own CSF Records, The Last Sunset is the debut statement from Norway's Conception. It serves as the foundational document for what would become one of the most respected cult acts in progressive metal. While later albums like Parallel Minds would achieve higher production values, this debut is prized for its unique atmosphere and the introduction of Roy Khan's singular vocal style. The album is notable for its blend of symphonic elements with a rhythmic approach influenced by flamenco and jazz, a hallmark of guitarist Tore Østby's style. Despite its 'power metal' labeling, the record leans heavily into art rock and noir aesthetics, setting it apart from the more bombastic German and American scenes of the time. The ten-minute closer 'Among the Gods' remains a high-water mark for the band's early progressive ambitions.
