Conception

Conception is a seminal Norwegian progressive metal outfit that bridged the gap between the technicality of the late 80s US prog-metal scene and the melodic sensibility of European power metal. Formed in 1989, their sound identity is defined by the virtuosic but tasteful guitar work of Tore Østby and the unique vocal delivery of Roy Khan. Khan’s transition from a classically trained opera background into metal provided the band with a signature 'croon' that would later define the sound of Kamelot.

Their career arc is marked by a steady evolution from the power metal roots of 'The Last Sunset' to the highly experimental, groove-oriented 'Flow' in 1997, which incorporated industrial and alternative rock influences. After a long hiatus during which Khan achieved global fame with Kamelot and Østby formed the cult prog band Ark, the group reunited in 2018. Critically, they are regarded as 'musician's musicians,' praised for their high-fidelity production and the prominent, technical role of the bass guitar. Their influence is most visible in the 'melodic prog' subgenre, where they are cited as pioneers of integrating non-metal textures into a heavy framework.
