Power Metal (1988) serves as the pivotal transition point for Pantera, marking the debut of vocalist Phil Anselmo and the final step away from their independent glam metal roots toward the thrash and groove styles that would make them global stars. Released on their own Metal Magic Records, the album is significantly heavier than its predecessors, Metal Magic, Projects in the Jungle, and I Am the Night. It features a more aggressive production style and faster tempos, heavily influenced by the burgeoning thrash scene in the US. Notably, the track 'Proud to Be Loud' gained cult status after appearing in the film Donnie Darko. Despite its importance in the band's evolution, Pantera has famously distanced themselves from their pre-1990 catalog, leaving this album out of print and making original copies highly sought-after collector's items.
