Pink Bubbles Go Ape

Released in 1991, Pink Bubbles Go Ape represents a critical juncture for Helloween. Following the departure of founding guitarist Kai Hansen, the band recruited Roland Grapow and attempted to move away from the sprawling 'Keeper of the Seven Keys' epic style toward something more concise and eccentric. Recorded at PUK studios in Denmark with producer Chris Tsangarides, the sessions were notoriously expensive and fraught with internal and external conflict. The album's lyrical direction shifted toward satire and personal reflection, most notably on 'Heavy Metal Hamsters,' a jab at their former label. Despite the internal friction, the album features some of Michael Kiske's most technically accomplished vocal performances and showcases Grapow's ability to integrate into the band's signature harmony-heavy sound. It remains a divisive but essential chapter in the evolution of European power metal.
