Thundersteel

Released in 1988, Thundersteel marked a radical departure and a triumphant return for Riot. Following a period of inactivity and a near-total lineup overhaul, founding guitarist Mark Reale recruited bassist Don Van Stavern, drummer Bobby Jarzombek, and vocalist Tony Moore. This new unit abandoned the band's earlier hard rock leanings in favor of a blistering speed and power metal approach. The album is widely considered a cornerstone of the US Power Metal movement, influencing countless bands in the power and melodic death metal genres. Recorded at Greene St. Recording in NYC, the production is crisp and punchy, highlighting Jarzombek's innovative double-bass work and Moore's incredible four-octave range. While it only reached No. 150 on the Billboard 200, its legacy has grown exponentially, cemented by its status as a 'cult classic' that saved the band's career and defined their modern identity.
