PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation

PetroDragonic Apocalypse represents King Gizzard's second full-length foray into heavy metal, following 2019's Infest the Rats' Nest. However, where its predecessor was a lean, punk-influenced thrash record, this album is a sprawling progressive metal work. Recorded using the same improvisational 'jam-first' methodology as their 2022 jazz-fusion efforts, the band built these complex tracks from scratch in the studio, later layering them with intricate eco-horror lyrics. The album functions as a concept piece detailing the hubris of humanity and the subsequent rise of a world-ending monster. Musically, it is defined by its use of odd time signatures, polyrhythms, and dual-lead guitar harmonies. It received high praise for its technicality and successfully bridging the gap between the band's psychedelic roots and the 'Big Four' thrash aesthetic. It stands as one of their most cohesive and intense releases to date.
