Empire of the Blind

Released in 2020 after an eleven-year hiatus, Empire of the Blind represents Heathen's fourth studio effort and their debut for Nuclear Blast. Produced by Zeuss, the album marks a significant moment in the band's history as the final recording to feature founding guitarist Lee Altus. Sonically, it continues the band's tradition of technical, melodic thrash but with a noticeably sharper, more modern production edge compared to 2009's The Evolution of Chaos. The album is notable for its collaborative spirit, specifically on the instrumental track 'A Fine Red Mist,' which features guest solos from Exodus members Gary Holt and Rick Hunolt, as well as former Heathen guitarist Doug Piercy. Critics praised the record for its 'top drawer' execution and its ability to meet high expectations after a decade-long wait, solidifying Heathen's status as the more sophisticated, melodic cousins of the more primal Bay Area thrash scene.
