LAGEOS

LAGEOS is a collaborative studio album between British electronic producer Actress (Darren Cunningham) and the London Contemporary Orchestra (LCO). Released in 2018, it serves as a studio realization of their live performances at the Barbican and elsewhere. The album represents a significant sonic pivot for Actress; while his previous work like 'R.I.P' or 'Ghettoville' was characterized by dense, murky, and lo-fi textures, LAGEOS is remarkably hi-fi and transparent. The project involved the LCO interpreting and 're-reading' tracks from the Actress catalog (such as 'Hubble' and 'N.E.W.') alongside new compositions. The instrumentation focuses heavily on piano, cello, and violin, often processed or augmented by Cunningham's electronic manipulations. Critically, the album was praised for its successful bridge between the avant-garde classical world and experimental techno, avoiding the clichés of 'orchestral' electronic music in favor of a more integrated, minimalist approach.
