Released in 2015, Instruments represents the culmination of Henrik Schwarz's long-standing interest in the intersection of formal composition and electronic music. Unlike his previous works which blended live instruments with laptop production, this album is a purely acoustic affair. Schwarz took his most celebrated electronic compositions and transcribed them for a chamber ensemble, effectively treating the orchestra as a human sequencer. The recording process involved the Tokyo Secret Orchestra and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, capturing the pieces with high-fidelity clarity that emphasizes the physical texture of the instruments. Critics noted the album's success in translating the 'swing' of house music into a classical context, particularly praising the 10-minute centerpiece 'Marvin Two'. It stands as a pivotal moment in Schwarz's career, marking his transition from a club-focused producer to a respected contemporary composer and arranger.
