Koloss

Released in 2012, Koloss represents a pivotal moment in Meshuggah's discography where the band leaned into a more 'groove-oriented' and 'organic' sound compared to the clinical precision of obZen. Drummer Tomas Haake noted that the band aimed for a more visceral feel, moving away from the purely mathematical to something more fluid. The album features significant collaborative songwriting between Fredrik Thordendal and Mårten Hagström, and even includes a composition by vocalist Jens Kidman ('Behind the Sun'). Critically, it was hailed as a masterpiece of the 'djent' movement they helped create, though it arguably transcends that label through its sheer sonic mass. The production is notably warmer and less 'clipped' than previous efforts, allowing the eight-string guitars to resonate with a more natural, albeit still terrifying, low-end. It stands as one of their most cohesive and atmospheric works, concluding with a rare ambient instrumental track.
