Released in 2011, Infected marked a significant stylistic and visual departure for HammerFall. After over a decade of defining the 'Templar' aesthetic of European power metal, the band collaborated with producer James Michael (Sixx:A.M.) to create a record with a more contemporary, aggressive edge. The album famously replaced the band's mascot, Hector, on the cover with a biological hazard theme, signaling a move toward horror and survivalist lyrics. Sonically, the album de-emphasizes the double-bass speed of traditional power metal in favor of heavy, mid-tempo grooves and a 'dryer' guitar tone. Despite the shift, it was a commercial success, debuting at number two in Sweden. It remains a polarizing but essential entry in their catalog, showcasing a band willing to risk their established brand to explore darker, more grounded heavy metal territories.
