Head to Mist

Released in 2016, Head to Mist serves as the debut full-length statement from Sweden's Grayscale Season. While the band would later evolve into even more experimental territories, this record captures them at their most visceral. Heavily influenced by the 'thall' movement pioneered by Vildhjarta, the album utilizes extremely low-tuned guitars and complex, syncopated rhythmic patterns. However, Grayscale Season distinguishes themselves by incorporating a significant amount of industrial noise and glitch aesthetics, moving the sound away from pure progressive metal and into a more claustrophobic, urban atmosphere. The production is intentionally dense and compressed, emphasizing the 'wall of sound' effect. Critical reception within the underground metal scene highlighted the band's ability to balance technical proficiency with a raw, emotional core, marking them as a significant new voice in the Swedish metalcore landscape.
