For Four Orchestras

Recorded in 1978, For Four Orchestras (Composition No. 82) represents the apex of Anthony Braxton's structural ambition during his tenure with Arista. While Braxton is primarily known as a woodwind virtuoso, this work features him strictly as a composer and conductor. Influenced by Stockhausen's 'Gruppen' and the spatial theories of Xenakis, Braxton designed the piece for four orchestras positioned in the corners of a hall with the audience in the center on swivel chairs. The work is built on cycles of single chords and 'instrumental flurries,' avoiding the dense, overbearing weight typical of large-scale orchestral works in favor of a transparent, interactive color field. Though some critics like Brian Olewnick found it 'dry' and 'academic,' DownBeat awarded it a rare five-star review, recognizing it as a landmark in the integration of jazz-based improvisation and European formalist structures. It remains one of the most physically and intellectually expansive recordings in the history of the avant-garde.
